Spinal Flow Yoga Class

Now is Always the Perfect Time to Start.  Prevention is ideal, but it is not the only solution. Your body is constantly changing because your brain can change itself.*

This Hatha-inspired class combines Yoga postures with the work of the BackMitra and other props to aid in releasing tension in your neck, shoulders, upper to mid-back, and lower spine.

The BackMitra is a soft but firm, supportive foam tool that, when laying on top of it, applies pressure along the spinal column, providing a gentle decompression for the intervertebral discs. The BackMitra was created by Guy Hamaekers and Brigitte Longueville.

Some key benefits of decompressing your spine can lead to:
• Improved alignment
• Relief from headaches
• Fuller range of movement in your hips
• Expanded breath capacity
• Relaxation of spinal muscles
• Improved function of rotator cuff
• Mobilization of spinal joints
• Restoring mobility in the neck, shoulders, and back

The Spinal classes are suitable for all levels of experience, from teenagers ages 13+ to mature ages 50+.

The introduction of the 4:30 pm Spinal Flow class will be a tremendous after-school class for our youth. Teenagers’ posture can suffer from insufficient support from carrying school bags and sitting for long periods with their studies.

This class is as much a preventative approach as it holds the potential to aid the recovery and healing of any injury.

The health and vitality of the spine support our body and help us maintain an upright posture. It protects the spinal cord & nerve roots that assists us in moving and performing our everyday tasks. Without a healthy spine, day-to-day activities can become extremely difficult. Poor posture, decreased mobility, joint deformities, and even respiratory problems. Your spine plays an essential role in your mental health. If your spine is out of alignment, it could trigger hormonal imbalances, migraines and headaches. Causing mood changes and lowered emotions and energy, affecting how well you sleep and even how you respond to stress.

A strong and relaxed back supports a solid and calm nervous system. Learning to slow down and rest back from the busyness of our lives, we begin to access and activate the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). Your ability to optimally rest and digest is how we rebalance the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) fight, flight or freeze state. Living too long in the SNS mode is exhausting and depleting.

The practice of yoga and mindfulness supports expanding one’s ability to concentrate. Paying attention refines self-awareness and the ability to live with a positive and healthy relationship within your body and mind.

The primary focus in this class is to experience the relaxation response. From here, we become more resourceful in learning to self-regulate our minds and emotions and self-heal the body.
